Santos has allowed Neymar time off to reflect on his future following Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup round of 16. Neymar, Brazil’s top scorer, has six months left on his Santos contract, but uncertainty looms over his continuation in football after retiring from international play.
The decision on Neymar’s future with Santos will be made post a vacation period, awaiting a signal to convene with the player and his representatives. Neymar, currently in the United States with his family, is set to enjoy a minimum of 10 days off, as reported.
After Brazil’s early World Cup exit following a 2-1 loss to Norway, Neymar, 34, announced his retirement from the national team. Neymar expressed his emotions, stating, “I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here, and I finished here,” reflecting on his journey since his international debut in 2010.
Neymar’s father hinted at the possibility of his son ending his club career through a social media post post-Brazil’s defeat. Encouraging Neymar to continue playing, his father wrote, “Ney, keep playing football. Feel the joy of having the ball at your feet again. Smile on the field again,” on Instagram.
Having played 43 matches for Santos since rejoining in January 2025, Neymar was included in Brazil’s World Cup squad by manager Carlo Ancelotti despite injury concerns and a lengthy absence from international duty. Neymar, a former player for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, made two substitute appearances in the tournament, scoring a late penalty against Norway.
