Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi primarily focused on preparing for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to the US in September. Rubio emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue between Washington and Beijing despite significant strategic disparities. He highlighted the need to address differences and ensure they are managed effectively to prevent escalation.

Rubio described the US and China as the world’s leading economic powers and stressed the necessity of maintaining communication channels despite existing disagreements. Both countries are working towards identifying areas of cooperation before the September summit to achieve tangible outcomes. Discussions also revolved around implementing previously agreed mechanisms, particularly in trade and investment sectors.

During the meeting, Rubio did not raise the issue of Chinese election interference but reiterated US opposition to Beijing’s military activities near Taiwan. He affirmed the US commitment to freedom of navigation operations and honoring treaty obligations with regional allies. Rubio acknowledged China’s constructive stance on opposing restrictions on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of such positions in resolving conflicts.

The Secretary noted progress in bilateral efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking, highlighting ongoing engagement between law enforcement agencies of both countries. Rubio also mentioned discussions on India, revealing that US tariffs on generic pharmaceutical imports were not raised by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during their talks. Rubio underscored the significance of sustained engagement with China despite strategic competition, drawing parallels with past US-Soviet communications during the Cold War.
