A proposal suggests building a permanent security fence up to 10 feet high around Lafayette Park, located across from the White House. The plan aims to enhance security measures for quicker closures during heightened threats. The concept plan, developed by the US Secret Service and other agencies, includes features like monitoring systems, alarms, and improved paving.

The proposed eight-to-10-foot fence would encompass the eight-acre Lafayette Park, ensuring enhanced security while maintaining public access and the park’s historical significance. Lafayette Park, known for hosting demonstrations and First Amendment activities, would see a larger paved plaza near H and 16th streets to accommodate gatherings when the park is closed. The design aims to balance security needs with public access and the aesthetics of the park.

The plan also addresses concerns about the park feeling more enclosed with continuous fencing. It proposes wider entrances, retention of existing benches, and access to statues during closures of Pennsylvania Avenue. The fence design includes four-inch spacing between pickets to prevent unauthorized entry while preserving scenic views. Additionally, the proposal suggests incorporating existing bollards and removing climbable features from the park’s historic fence.

Officials highlight that the current temporary security system, involving barriers ranging from four to 10 feet in height, can be time-consuming to install and remove. The proposed permanent system is expected to streamline closures, reduce staffing needs, and offer a more stable and secure surface. Planning for the project is set to continue until 2026, with potential construction starting in 2027, subject to funding availability and regulatory approvals.
