Security measures have been increased in sensitive areas of Bhopal’s Old City ahead of Friday prayers to prevent any disturbances following recent communal tension. Additional police personnel have been deployed in crowded localities, and Section 144 prohibitory measures are in place. Vigilance has been heightened around major mosques like Taj-ul-Masajid, Jama Masjid, and Moti Masjid, with separate security arrangements at each gate.
Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar has put the police on high alert, warning of strict action against any disruptions during the scheduled Friday prayers from 12:40 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. He emphasized that the police will take firm measures against anyone causing unrest and urged residents to avoid unnecessary gatherings. Kumar also mentioned the deployment of extra forces alongside district police and monitoring of social media activities.
The increased security measures come after protests and incidents of stone-pelting in the Old City following the assault on Arif Khan on May 10. Khan was reportedly attacked by individuals associated with a Hindu organization, leading to outrage within the Muslim community. Seven individuals, including the main accused Vijendra Prajapati, have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The accused face charges under Sections 299 and 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for religious sentiments and rioting.
Bhopal City Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi has called for peace within the city, noting that all accused persons have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. He urged the public not to react impulsively to provocation or misinformation. The police have assured that all individuals involved in the case are in custody, and investigations are progressing.
