A semiconductor cleanroom skilling initiative in India has successfully trained its first batch of candidates from the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Dholera. Sixteen students completed the ‘UHP Semiconductor Welding Programme’, focusing on ultra-high purity welding skills crucial for contamination-free gas delivery and precision process piping systems in semiconductor fabrication environments.
The second batch of trainees has already started their training at the same facility. This program, conducted at ITI Dholera in collaboration with the Gujarat government and a private company, marks a significant step towards creating industry-ready manpower for the country’s growing chip manufacturing ecosystem.
This initiative establishes a semiconductor-dedicated cleanroom training facility within an Industrial Training Institute in India, directly integrated with a commercial semiconductor fabrication ecosystem under development. The training program spans six weeks, with foundational instruction in Ahmedabad followed by advanced practical training at the ITI Dholera cleanroom facility.
Approximately 70% of the curriculum is hands-on, covering various skills such as orbital welding, infrared fusion welding, helium leak testing, pressure testing, precision tube preparation, cleanroom behavior protocols, quality inspection, and documentation practices. The cleanroom facility at ITI Dholera is a containerized ISO Class 1-equivalent environment equipped with specialized systems like orbital welding machines, IR fusion welding units, leak detection systems, and pressure testing setups.
The program aims to align skill development with the needs of India’s expanding semiconductor manufacturing sector. It also supports broader industrial development in Dholera and nearby regions, where multiple fabrication and advanced manufacturing projects are ongoing.
