Senegal’s midfielder Pape Gueye has opted to step back from playing for his national team due to dissatisfaction with the current coaching staff. This decision follows Senegal’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Belgium in the FIFA World Cup round of 32, despite initially leading 2-0.
Gueye expressed his frustration on social media, stating that he will not represent his country as long as the current coach, Pape Thiaw, remains in charge. The 27-year-old, a vital player for Senegal, was visibly upset after being substituted during the match and witnessing his team’s defeat.
Having been under Thiaw’s management since December 2024, Senegal faced controversy resulting in the team being stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. The future of Thiaw with the national team is now uncertain following their early exit from the World Cup.
