Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra expressed disappointment over the Union Budget 2026–27, stating that Odisha has been neglected despite its support for the ruling BJP-led Union government. Patra criticized the budget for overlooking Odisha’s infrastructure and development needs, highlighting the absence of major projects for the state.
Patra pointed out the announcement of high-speed railway corridors for various cities across India, excluding Odisha from the proposal. He also mentioned the allocation of ship repair ecosystems and freight corridors for other regions, leaving Odisha out of significant connectivity and industrial initiatives. Additionally, Patra raised concerns about the exclusion of Odisha from national development projects, including archaeological site development and the Buddhist circuit.
Questioning the benefits of proposed projects for Odisha’s communities, Patra emphasized the need for fair returns on the state’s resources. He criticized the lack of progress in tourism projects, such as the Konark Temple development and the halt of the Bhubaneswar Metro project. Patra demanded a re-evaluation of the Union Budget to ensure equitable development for Odisha.
