Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition, R. Ashoka, criticized the government for the inadequate state of public toilets in Bengaluru. He highlighted that despite claims of developing a “Brand Bengaluru,” the city’s sanitation facilities are severely lacking. Ashoka pointed out that there is only one public toilet for every 30,000 people in Bengaluru, showcasing the government’s failure in providing essential civic amenities.
Ashoka, referring to a survey by the Bengaluru Political Action Committee (B.PAC), emphasized that a significant portion of public toilets in the city are unsuitable for use. He noted that 58% of these facilities have deteriorated into garbage dumps and areas for drug use and smoking. Additionally, the survey revealed that 60% of public toilets lack water facilities, with only a small fraction meeting cleanliness standards.
The BJP leader further stated that the majority of public toilets are inaccessible or unsuitable for women and individuals with disabilities. Ashoka criticized the state government for neglecting the basic needs of Bengaluru’s residents, including office-goers, women, and sanitation workers. He questioned the government’s priorities, highlighting the disconnect between its promises and the ground reality of sanitation conditions in the city.
Ashoka called on the government to urgently address the situation by repairing closed public toilets and ensuring they are reopened for public use. He demanded that all public toilets be adequately equipped with water, electricity, cleanliness, and security measures. The Leader of the Opposition warned that Bengaluru’s voters would hold the government accountable in the upcoming Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections.
