Senior BJP leader R. Ashoka has called on the Karnataka government to take urgent action in response to the emerging drought situation in the state. Ashoka emphasized the need for immediate measures such as declaring drought-affected areas, conducting a scientific crop loss survey, and implementing an emergency plan to support farmers and rural communities.
The state is experiencing a significant rainfall deficit, leading to concerns in more than 150 taluks facing drought-like conditions. The delayed southwest monsoon has impacted sowing operations, jeopardizing standing crops and the livelihoods of farmers and agricultural laborers. Declining reservoir water levels are also raising fears of a potential drinking water crisis, particularly in districts like Belagavi and Bagalkot.
Ashoka criticized the Congress government for what he perceived as a lackluster response to the worsening situation. He highlighted the failure of district-in-charge ministers to hold review meetings or visit affected areas, noting the absence of a full-time minister in the Agriculture Department. The BJP leader stressed the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by farmers and urged the government to prioritize public welfare over political considerations.
The Opposition leader underscored the importance of swift action in declaring drought-hit regions to facilitate assessments, compensation, fodder supply, and water arrangements. He proposed a comprehensive plan encompassing alternative crops, livestock protection, employment generation, and the efficient implementation of relief measures like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to support vulnerable communities.
