Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi announced his resignation from the Indian National Congress, expressing deep hurt and a lack of support within the party’s Assam unit. Bordoloi stated that repeated humiliation and an unsupportive environment led to his decision, emphasizing the emotional toll it took on him.
Bordoloi highlighted instances where senior Congress members insulted him, causing feelings of alienation. Despite acknowledging the role of Congress in his political career, he emphasized that the prevailing circumstances left him with no choice but to resign. The veteran leader mentioned that the deteriorating situation within the Assam Congress made it untenable for him to continue.
His departure is viewed as a significant blow to the Congress in Assam, especially during a period of internal challenges and upcoming political contests. Sources indicate that Bordoloi is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party and may be fielded as a candidate from the Dispur Assembly constituency, a crucial seat in the state capital region.
In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi expressed sadness while stepping down from all party roles. He had previously voiced concerns about the functioning of the Congress party and the state president, Gaurav Gogoi. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned that if Bordoloi joins the BJP, he will be respected and offered a ticket for the upcoming Assembly polls.
