A Senior Divisional Materials Manager of the North Eastern Railway in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for reportedly taking a bribe of Rs 1.70 lakh. The arrest followed a complaint by a Government e-Marketplace-registered private firm, which claimed partial payment for supplying furniture to the railway office.
The complainant alleged that the Sr DMM demanded the bribe on July 15 to expedite pending payments and ensure future payments to the firm. The accused was also accused of threatening the complainant with contract denial if the bribe was not paid. The CBI conducted a trap operation on July 23 and caught the officer red-handed accepting the bribe.
After the arrest, the accused was presented before a Lucknow court and remanded to judicial custody until August 7. The CBI mentioned that the investigation into the case is ongoing. In a separate incident, a former manager of a gramin bank branch in Meerut was sentenced to four years in prison and fined Rs 10,000 in a bribery case from a decade ago.
