Ending speculation, Madan Mitra, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and Kamarhati MLA, resigned from all posts in Mamata Banerjee’s faction. He joined the faction led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, criticizing Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for the party’s decline. Mitra emphasized that the party’s current state is due to Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership.
Seated with Ritabrata Banerjee in the West Bengal Assembly, Mitra expressed gratitude to Mamata Banerjee while announcing his resignation. He mentioned that despite switching factions, he still considers himself part of the Trinamool Congress. Mitra confirmed his attendance at the rival faction’s Martyrs’ Day program on July 21 in Kolkata.
Mitra, known for his key roles within the party, relinquished all organizational responsibilities in Mamata Banerjee’s faction. His move follows a summons by the Enforcement Directorate to his family in connection with a money-laundering probe. More than 60 MLAs have already shifted to Ritabrata Banerjee’s camp post the party’s split after the Assembly election defeat, with Mitra being the latest prominent defection.
