Serena Williams and Venus Williams have pulled out of the Wimbledon doubles draw following Serena’s knee injury. Serena made the announcement on Instagram, expressing her disappointment as her knee had not sufficiently recovered from the injury sustained during her first-round singles match earlier in the week.
This decision comes after Serena injured her knee during her first singles match in nearly four years, where she lost to Maya Joint. The iconic Williams sisters, known for their doubles prowess with six Wimbledon titles and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, were granted a wild card entry into the doubles draw.
Serena and Venus were scheduled to play Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio in the first round. This would have been their first doubles match since the 2022 US Open, which was also Serena’s last singles match before her recent comeback to the sport.
Before Wimbledon, Serena had been easing back into competition by playing doubles matches at the Queen’s Club Championships and in Berlin. While Serena did not specify a return date, she hinted at a potential comeback in the near future, leaving fans hopeful for her return to the court soon.
