Seven products from Jammu and Kashmir have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tags, providing legal protection and market recognition. These products include Sulai Honey from Ramban, Bhaderwah Rajmash, Kaladi of Udhampur–Ramnagar, Basmati Rice from Jammu, Ramban Anardana, Mushqbudji Rice, and the renowned Kashmir Saffron. The GI tags aim to safeguard these unique products from counterfeiting and misuse, while also boosting their branding and export potential.
The GI recognition acknowledges the distinct geographical origin and traditional cultivation methods linked to these products. Additionally, around 20 more crops and products from Jammu and Kashmir are in line for GI registration, emphasizing the protection of local varieties and the enhancement of farmer incomes. Notably, Agriculture Universities in the region have secured a total of 164 patents, showcasing advancements in research, innovation, and agricultural technology.
Officials view the acquisition of GI tags as a significant stride towards reinforcing intellectual property rights in the agricultural sector, focusing on value addition and global competitiveness. A GI tag is an intellectual property right that identifies products originating from specific regions, possessing unique qualities due to their geographical origin. It aids in preventing unauthorized use, supports marketing efforts, and safeguards traditional, agricultural, or manufactured goods by highlighting their specific geographical origin.
