Severe cold and dense fog in North Bihar led to a significant road accident on the Muzaffarpur-Darbhanga National Highway. The collision, near Kewatsa Chowk under the Benibad police station area, involved around half a dozen vehicles, including three ambulances. An Assam-registered ambulance carrying a patient on a ventilator and oxygen support was completely wrecked, leaving three people, including the driver, with serious injuries.
The impact of the crash was so intense that the front of the ambulance was crushed, trapping the driver and the patient’s relatives inside. Local villagers, upon hearing cries for help, acted swiftly and managed to rescue the trapped individuals by breaking open the ambulance’s doors and windows using sticks and iron rods. The injured were promptly taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, for advanced treatment due to their critical condition.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident occurred when a vehicle ahead suddenly slowed down or applied brakes due to poor visibility, causing a chain collision among the closely following vehicles. The Benibad police team responded to the scene, leading to a long traffic jam on the National Highway. With the assistance of local villagers and a crane, the police cleared the damaged vehicles and restored traffic flow.
The Benibad police station in charge mentioned that an investigation is ongoing, with efforts being made to notify the families of the injured. The minimum temperature in nearly all 38 districts of Bihar remains below 10 degrees Celsius, contributing to low visibility. Dense fog persists, posing significant risks to commuters in the region.
