Severe monsoon conditions persist in Maharashtra, leading to flash floods, river overflows, and structural collapses over the past day. The state has witnessed 62 human deaths and 200 animal fatalities since the onset of the monsoon on June 1, as per the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority.
The State Emergency Operation Center reported heavy rainfall in coastal and western districts, with Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Mumbai Suburban, and Pune experiencing significant precipitation levels. Structural collapses and lightning strikes have been the primary causes of the 62 human fatalities, with 25 deaths attributed to structural collapses and 23 to lightning strikes in various districts.
Lightning strikes have also resulted in a substantial number of livestock deaths, accounting for 181 out of the total 200 animal fatalities in the state. Landslides and mudflows have caused six deaths and four injuries, mainly affecting mountainous regions in Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Satara, and Pune.
The state has witnessed six fatalities due to tree falls and two deaths from direct flooding. Rivers in Maharashtra have swelled significantly, surpassing critical danger levels, leading to evacuations and high-alert warnings for low-lying areas. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has issued a red alert for the entire Maharashtra coastline, anticipating high waves and tidal surges until midnight.
Disaster management authorities have advised the suspension of nearshore recreational activities and prohibited small fishing vessels and commercial boats from venturing into the sea due to the risk of wave surges and coastal erosion.
