A severe tropical storm is heading north towards Japan’s Kyushu island after passing over Okinawa. Typhoon Jangmi, the sixth typhoon of the season, is currently positioned west-northwest of Amami-Oshima Island, moving at a speed of about 25 km per hour. In Okinawa Prefecture, over 10 people were injured due to strong winds.
Airlines have canceled more than 320 flights to and from Kyushu and other areas. Shinkansen bullet trains may also face disruptions, particularly on the Tokaido line from Tuesday night into Wednesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning of strong winds, heavy rain, and potential landslides and floods in low-lying areas in the Amami region and western Japan.
Last September, Tropical Storm Peipah caused injuries and damage in Shizuoka prefecture. Reports from local media indicated 24 people were wounded and 40 houses damaged in four municipalities. Makinohara city saw severe incidents like tiles blown off roofs, utility poles collapsing, and injuries to residents. Chubu Electric Power Grid Co. reported power outages affecting around 17,000 homes in Makinohara and other areas due to tornadoes and strong winds.
