Sevilla dismissed coach Matias Almeyda following a home loss to Valencia, leaving the team in 15th place in La Liga, just three points above the relegation zone. Almeyda, who managed the team for 32 matches, achieved eight wins, seven draws, and 14 defeats in La Liga. The club expressed gratitude for his efforts but confirmed his departure.
Almeyda acknowledged the possibility of losing his job after a string of disappointing results. Sevilla has seen a succession of coaches since Julen Lopetegui’s departure in October 2022. Almeyda faced challenges due to internal conflicts and financial constraints, impacting the team’s performance in attack and midfield creativity.
The club is considering former Alaves coach Luis Garcia Plaza as a potential replacement for Almeyda. However, the new coach will face a tough season end with upcoming matches against Oviedo and Atletico Madrid. Getafe manager Jose Bordalas is also in the running, with Sevilla’s board members showing interest in him since last year.
Sevilla had previously considered Jose Bordalas as a coach, but the board rejected the idea due to concerns about his fit with the club. Almeyda, who joined Sevilla from AEK Athens, faced challenges in the latter part of the season, exacerbated by a seven-game touchline ban.
