Seychelles recently awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the prestigious ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ Presidential Distinction. This award, the highest national honor of Seychelles, was created after the repeal of the National Awards system and the Medal of the Republic earlier this month. The National Assembly of Seychelles passed the National Awards (Repeal) Bill 2026, dissolving the National Awards Committee due to transparency concerns.
Prime Minister Modi received the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ honor from Seychelles President Patrick Herminie during a special ceremony. This recognition highlighted Modi’s exceptional leadership in sustainability and ocean governance, his support for Small Island Developing States, and his dedication to strengthening Seychelles-India friendship. The title ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ signifies responsible stewardship of marine resources and reflects Seychelles’ identity as a nation tied to the ocean.
The award ceremony took place during PM Modi’s State Visit to Seychelles, coinciding with the nation’s Golden Jubilee and the 50th anniversary of India-Seychelles diplomatic relations. Modi was honored for his environmental leadership, advocacy for developing countries, and commitment to the Blue Economy and climate action. PM Modi expressed gratitude for the honor, dedicating it to countries combating climate change and emphasizing the importance of environmental protection for future generations.
Recognizing Prime Minister Modi’s efforts in sustainable development, the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ award adds to his list of accolades, including the Agricola Medal by FAO, Seoul Peace Prize, and UN Champion of the Earth Award. Seychelles views this distinction as significant, given its vulnerability to climate change and ocean issues, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with global leaders like PM Modi.
