Members of Parliament Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, from the Congress party, have voiced their backing for India’s foreign policy during the West Asia turmoil involving Iran, Israel, and the US. Tharoor and Tewari commended India’s adept handling of the situation, emphasizing the need to protect the country’s interests in the region. Tharoor justified India’s stance as a responsible statecraft rather than a moral surrender, citing Jawaharlal Nehru’s non-alignment policy.
Tharoor highlighted the importance of India’s diplomacy balancing principle with pragmatism, citing Nehru’s non-alignment as a strategy to safeguard India’s sovereignty. He described India’s approach as ‘multi-alignment,’ engaging with various powers while prioritizing national interests. Tharoor acknowledged the unjustifiability of the Iran war under international law but defended India’s ‘silence’ as a prudent move for national interest.
Manish Tewari, at a recent event, supported the government’s decision to maintain a cautious distance from the conflicts in West Asia, noting India’s historical role as a marginal player in the region. Tewari emphasized the significance of strategic autonomy in safeguarding India’s interests and navigating complex geopolitical dynamics. The endorsement of India’s position by Tharoor and Tewari challenges criticisms of the government’s handling of the West Asia crisis.
