Sheena Chohan Revisits Rabindranath Tagore’s Powerful Women-Led Worlds On His Birth Anniversary
From Bela To Patralekha: Sheena Chohan Pays Tribute To Rabindranath Tagore Through His Iconic Female Characters
On the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, actress Sheena Chohan is revisiting one of the most defining artistic phases of her early career — working on Mukti and Patralekha, two films inspired by Tagore’s literary world and directed by legendary filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta.
Sheena Chohan shares a glimpse from Rabindranath Tagores Film Mukti:
Both stories were deeply rooted in powerful female narratives long before women-led storytelling became mainstream. In Mukti, Sheena portrayed Bela, Tagore’s daughter, in an emotional story inspired by his writings and personal world. In Patralekha, she explored the journey of a woman who quietly revolts against the emotional limitations imposed on her marriage — refusing to remain confined to writing letters and poetry merely to sustain a relationship, and instead discovering her own voice and individuality from within.

Sheena Chohan shares a glimpse from Rabindranath Tagores Film Patralekha:
Preparing for these roles became an immersive artistic process for the actress, who studied Tagore’s poetry, literature, emotional landscapes and philosophy extensively to transform into the characters.
Recalling the experience, Sheena says, “Working on Tagore’s world at the very beginning of my career transformed me as an actor. I remember studying his poetry, his silences, the emotional depth of his women characters and the rhythm of his writing — not just to perform the role, but to truly understand the soul behind the words. Both Mukti and Patralekha demanded immense internal work, restraint and emotional truth.”
She further adds, “What stayed with me most was how progressive and emotionally layered Tagore’s women were. They had strength, individuality, longing, rebellion and grace. Those films shaped my foundation as an actor and deeply connected me to meaningful cinema and literature.”

The films continue to remain an important milestone in Sheena’s artistic journey, marking the beginning of her identity as a performance-driven actor drawn towards layered, literary and transformative storytelling.
After Mukti and Patralekha, Sheena Chohan went on to headline 15 acclaimed national and international independent films, establishing herself as a powerhouse performer strongly associated with nuanced characters in women-led narratives.
