Sheikh Saifuddin, the main suspect in the killing of Prashant Dey, a BJP worker from Bagnan near Kolkata, was apprehended on Sunday, just 12 hours after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vowed decisive action. This marks the 11th arrest in the murder investigation conducted jointly by Howrah District Police and the state’s CID. The CID assumed control of the case on June 21 as per the Chief Minister’s directive, with 51 individuals implicated in the FIR.
After the capture of 11 suspects, 40 remain at large. Sheikh Saifuddin is scheduled to appear in a Howrah district court later in the day, where the prosecution will request his CID custody. The Chief Minister, on Saturday, visited the home of the deceased party worker, offering compensation to the family and ensuring justice. He proceeded to the Bagnan police station to discuss the case with officers and CID officials, emphasizing the need to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Chief Minister Adhikari stressed that no one involved in Prashant’s case would escape justice, even if it required extensive investigation. He highlighted the brutal attacks on several individuals with lethal weapons on June 17, resulting in multiple injuries. Some victims are still hospitalized in Kolkata, receiving specialized care under government supervision. Tragically, Prashant succumbed to his injuries, prompting the Chief Minister to closely monitor the situation from the outset.
The Howrah District Magistrate’s Office has already compensated the family with Rs 4 lakh, with an additional Rs 5 lakh pledged from the Chief Minister’s Fund. Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced a contract-based job for his elder daughter at the BDO office.
