Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur discussed the rise of micro-dramas, emphasizing their market expansion. He pointed out that globally, the micro-drama market is valued at nearly $150 billion in China by 2026, surpassing traditional box office earnings. In India, the market stands at $1.5 billion, equivalent to the country’s theatrical box office revenue for the same year.
Shekhar Kapur noted that while micro-dramas offer a lucrative business opportunity due to their scalability, they may not produce iconic films like ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ or ‘Sholay’. He highlighted the role of technology companies and platforms in investing in this growing sector to capture market share efficiently.
Discussing the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in production efficiency, Kapur questioned whether storytelling can truly scale with technology. He shared his ongoing work on ‘Masoom 2’, emphasizing that while micro-dramas present a promising business model, their potential for delivering impactful stories remains to be seen.
The filmmaker, currently engaged in the sequel ‘Masoom The Next Generation’, expressed excitement as A R Rahman, the Oscar-winning composer, recorded a track for the upcoming project. Rahman, who is also co-producing the film, collaborated with Kapur on various past ventures, including ‘Elizabeth – The Golden Age’ and musical productions like ‘Bombay Dreams’.
