Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren was posthumously honored with the Padma Bhushan at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His wife, Rupi Soren, received the award from President Droupadi Murmu in the presence of dignitaries like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The President personally presented the award to Rupi Soren, who was in a wheelchair, in a touching moment.
Shibu Soren, a significant figure in Jharkhand’s political and social landscape, dedicated his life to tribal identity issues and rights over land and forests. He was affectionately known as ‘Dishom Guru’ and ‘Guruji’ due to his lifelong commitment. Born in 1944, Shibu Soren was inspired by his father’s activism against exploitative practices, which influenced his own path significantly.
In the 1970s, Shibu Soren led movements against exploitation in various regions, advocating for tribal farmers’ land rights. He also established night schools to promote education and self-reliance among local communities. His efforts culminated in the formation of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in 1972 and the eventual creation of Jharkhand in 2000, marking a significant milestone in his struggle.
Shibu Soren, who served as Jharkhand Chief Minister for three terms, was a prominent voice for tribal communities. Despite his roles in politics, he maintained a direct approach with people, focusing on grassroots movements and village meetings. His legacy as a champion for tribal rights and a grassroots leader endures to this day.
