The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has accused Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of jeopardizing the state’s river water rights to safeguard his position. Akali Dal leader Parambans Singh Romana likened this action to a historical compromise by a former Chief Minister and criticized the current Chief Minister for being willing to divert state waters to Haryana under Arvind Kejriwal’s directives. Romana emphasized the party’s stance on protecting Punjab’s water resources and preventing any flow to Haryana.
Romana questioned the Chief Minister’s silence on Punjab’s water scarcity and alleged readiness to allocate water to Haryana. He highlighted the Chief Minister’s statement regarding prioritizing water allocation before constructing the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. The Akali Dal affirmed its commitment to thwarting any attempts to transfer Punjab’s water to neighboring states, emphasizing its resolve to rectify historical water injustices and prioritize Punjab’s agricultural needs over inter-state water sharing.
The SAD leader reiterated the party’s opposition to the alleged conspiracy of diverting Punjab’s waters to Haryana and Delhi, attributing this agenda to AAP convener Kejriwal since 2017. He underscored the party’s determination to resist such actions, citing past statements and legal actions taken to safeguard Punjab’s water resources. The SAD remains resolute in its stance against compromising the state’s water rights for the benefit of other regions.
