Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray expressed concern over the increasing incidents of sexual assault and murder of minor girls in Maharashtra. While the Central government tested emergency sirens on mobile phones nationwide for disaster alerts, Thackeray highlighted the alarming silence on law and order issues in the state.
In a party publication, ‘Saamana’, the brutal rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Nasrapur, Pune district, triggered public outrage. Citizens protested by bringing the child’s body onto the streets, demanding immediate justice, but were met with police baton-charging instead of support.
The editorial pointed out a disturbing trend of rising atrocities, including incidents in Chakan, Sangli, and Nagpur. It criticized Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for allegedly neglecting women’s safety amidst his focus on other states. The Thackeray camp accused the government of failing to address the deteriorating security situation in Maharashtra.
The Shiv Sena criticized the government’s Ladki Bahin Yojana, questioning whether providing Rs 1,500 monthly aid to women justifies overlooking the safety of their daughters. It emphasized the collapse of the system meant to protect the vulnerable and called for a genuine apology to the women of Maharashtra for the failure to ensure their safety.
