Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray has urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to allocate special funds for the repair of over 13,500 “cessed” buildings in Mumbai. Thackeray emphasized the urgent need for structural reinforcement in these aging buildings to ensure residents’ safety before the monsoon season.

Highlighting the financial constraints faced by the Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB), Thackeray stressed the importance of preventing any mishaps due to insufficient funds. He called for a dedicated fund allocation to expedite the redevelopment process of these structures, many of which have been stuck in bureaucratic processes for years.

The “cessed” buildings in Mumbai, categorized based on their construction period, are maintained by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) through a repair cess paid by tenants. These structures, some dating back to before 1940, face challenges in maintenance due to low rents and inadequate funds for repairs.

Redevelopment of these buildings is often delayed by disputes between landlords and tenants, as well as challenges in finding profitable solutions for developers. The demand for special funds arises when the repair board’s budget is depleted, leaving many buildings vulnerable to the harsh Mumbai monsoon without necessary repairs.
