Shreyas Iyer reached a significant milestone in his IPL career by captaining Punjab Kings in his 100th match, becoming the fifth player in IPL history to achieve this feat. This landmark was achieved during Punjab Kings’ recent IPL 2026 game against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium. Iyer now stands alongside renowned captains like MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in this elite group.
The 31-year-old cricketer has showcased his leadership skills across three different IPL franchises, namely Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings. Iyer initially led Delhi Capitals in 41 matches, guiding them to their first IPL final in 2020. He later moved to Kolkata Knight Riders, where he captained the team in 29 games from 2022 to 2024, culminating in the franchise’s IPL title win in 2024.
In his latest stint with Punjab Kings, Iyer has already steered the team to another finals appearance, making him the first captain in IPL history to lead three different teams to the tournament final. His success as a captain is evident from his 56 victories in the first 99 matches, including two Super Over wins, with a win percentage of 58.3%, on par with MS Dhoni, the best in IPL history.
Shreyas Iyer’s leadership journey in the IPL has been marked by consistent success and adaptability across various teams. Despite Punjab Kings’ mixed performance in IPL 2026, Iyer’s influence as a captain remains significant. From transforming Delhi Capitals into contenders to securing Kolkata Knight Riders’ title victory and now steering Punjab Kings, Iyer continues to establish himself as a standout captain in the league.
At the pinnacle of IPL captaincy stands MS Dhoni, who has led in 235 matches for Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant from 2008 to 2025.
