People in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir participated in a shutter-down strike and protests organized by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Clashes broke out between demonstrators and law enforcement, particularly in Mirpur district, resulting in injuries to around a dozen individuals, including police personnel in Dadyal town. The clashes initially occurred in Amb village, leading to injuries, and later escalated, with another protester critically injured and hospitalized in Mirpur.
Women staged a demonstration in Khaliqabad, Mirpur district, while peaceful protests took place in Islamgarh, Chakswari, and Samahni valley in Bhimber. Markets in Muzaffarabad remained closed, and public transport was halted, causing deserted roads. Law enforcement conducted flag marches in Muzaffarabad, with clashes erupting at Airport Chowk, where tear gas was used to disperse protesters, resulting in arrests.
Videos from the scene depicted damaged vehicles and motorcycles after the clashes. Residents later organized a sit-in to protest against what they perceived as excessive force by law enforcement. Protests also occurred in various areas of PoK’s Poonch division, with the JAAC setting a deadline for the government to address their demands by July 8, threatening further action if not met.
Internet services remained suspended in PoK for the 30th consecutive day. The unrest in the region heightened after the JAAC was banned by Pakistani authorities on June 5, leading to increased tensions. The JAAC has put forth demands, including the removal of 12 reserved seats in the Legislative Assembly for Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan.
