Singapore’s High Commission in India extended congratulations to BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma as he prepared to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term following the BJP-led NDA’s victory in the recent Assembly elections. Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, referred to Singapore as a “trusted friend” of Assam and expressed commitment to supporting the state’s growth and development. The High Commissioner praised Sarma, stating that his leadership would elevate Assam to greater heights and emphasized Singapore’s enduring support for the state.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance secured a significant win in the Assam Assembly elections, ensuring Sarma’s continuation as Chief Minister for another term. Sarma is set to take the oath of office in Guwahati later in the day in the presence of senior BJP and NDA leaders. Over recent years, Assam and Singapore have expanded cooperation in various sectors such as industrial investment, technology, infrastructure, and skill development, with Singapore being a key international partner under India’s Act East Policy.
Assam-Singapore relations have increasingly focused on economic partnerships, green energy initiatives, semiconductor manufacturing, and urban planning collaborations. Initiatives under the “Advantage Assam 2.0” program aim to attract global investment and boost industrial development in the region. The Assam government has actively engaged Singapore-based companies for the development of a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem at Jagiroad’s Electronic City project. Sarma had discussions with Tharman Shanmugaratnam during the World Economic Forum to explore avenues for expanding cooperation between Assam and Singapore, including nursing skills development and training programs to enhance employability opportunities for skilled workers in Singapore.
