Snowfall in the higher areas and rain in the plains of Kashmir Valley in the past 24 hours marked the end of a three-month dry spell on Monday, coinciding with the start of the 40-day ‘Chillai Kalan’ period. Gulmarg ski resort received around nine inches of snow, delighting skiers and holidaymakers. Sonamarg and Pahalgam hill stations also saw their first snow of the season, boosting hopes for increased tourism. Farmers and orchardists welcomed the precipitation, crucial for the upcoming crop season. The traditional snowfall during ‘Chillai Kalan’ helps replenish water reservoirs in the mountains, supporting water sources in the region. Pulmonologists anticipate improved air quality due to the rain and snow, offering relief to those with respiratory issues. The Meteorological Department forecasts scattered rain/snow in the next 24 hours, with milder intensity. Temperatures in Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam ranged from 4 to -2.4 degrees Celsius. Several roads, including the Srinagar-Leh highway, are closed due to snowfall.
