A social media influencer known as Shamik Adhikary, with the online alias ‘Nonsane’, was taken into custody in Kolkata on Thursday. The arrest followed accusations by his 22-year-old girlfriend of being forcibly confined and subjected to mistreatment at his residence for nearly a day. The woman reported instances of physical violence and intimidation during her alleged captivity.
The complainant disclosed that she visited the influencer’s home on February 2, where the situation escalated into a dispute leading to her purported detention from evening until the next afternoon. She claimed to have suffered physical abuse, unwanted touching, and verbal threats during this period. Following the incident, she lodged a formal complaint with the Behala police station.
Law enforcement authorities acted on the complaint, registering a case against the influencer under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Subsequently, the accused was apprehended by the police. The individual, who commands a substantial online following, has faced backlash from his supporters on social media in response to the allegations.
The influencer, recognized for his critical stance towards the state government and advocacy for women’s safety, has refrained from public statements regarding the accusations. Meanwhile, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya criticized the administration for what he perceives as targeting social media figures. Malviya condemned the handling of the case, alleging political motives and character assassination by senior Trinamool Congress members.
