The South 24 Parganas district administration is contemplating a reinvestigation into the construction of Abhishek Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress office, which was built on the site of a bakery destroyed by fire in late 2014. The office faced partial demolition recently, halted by a Calcutta High Court order.
Following the discovery that the Amtala building lacked proper construction permits, the district administration initiated the demolition process. Concerns have arisen regarding the fire at the bakery and subsequent land ownership changes leading to the office’s construction.
Allegations of foul play surrounding the bakery fire have prompted calls for a fresh investigation into the incident and the subsequent property developments. The district administration plans to submit a detailed report to the state secretariat for a final decision on whether to proceed with reinvestigation.
Local BJP leader Abhijit Das, also known as Bobby, raised questions about the legality of the construction, highlighting discrepancies in the building’s height and the rapid pace of development post-fire. He has filed a corruption complaint against Abhishek Banerjee, alleging misappropriation of funds post-Cyclone Amphan in 2020.
