South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, raised concerns about a crucial refereeing call in their FIFA World Cup 2026 debut match, where they suffered a 2-0 loss to Mexico at Estadio Azteca. The team ended the game with only nine players on the field due to three red cards, with Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane being sent off, alongside Mexico’s captain, Cesar Montes. Broos acknowledged the first red card but disputed the second, believing his player was fouled instead.
Broos, despite facing the tournament co-hosts and a partisan crowd, emphasized that South Africa controlled significant parts of the game after a shaky start. He noted that while playing against hosts brings pressure, they managed possession well after the initial 20 minutes. The coach highlighted the team’s ability to handle the situation and play effectively.
The coach did not solely blame external factors for the defeat but also pointed out defensive errors that cost his team dearly. Broos lamented the lapses in defense that allowed Mexico to exploit transitions and score twice. He emphasized the importance of avoiding such mistakes and tightening up defensively to prevent similar outcomes in future matches.
After the disappointing start to their World Cup campaign, South Africa aims to regroup and address their defensive weaknesses in the upcoming Group stage games.
