South African bowler Shabnim Ismail is set to make a comeback to international cricket, offering herself for selection ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Cricket South Africa unexpectedly postponed the squad announcement just before a scheduled media briefing, citing the need for internal reviews. The delay, reportedly due to internal discussions, has sparked interest, especially regarding Ismail’s potential return.
The experienced pacer had retired after the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup but continued playing in franchise leagues globally. Her return could significantly bolster South Africa’s pace attack, especially with concerns over Marizanne Kapp’s fitness. Kapp, a senior all-rounder, has been out of action since February due to illness but is expected to recover in time for the World Cup.
Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi is in favor of reintegrating Ismail into the national team, recognizing the value of her experience and pace in major tournaments. Former captain Dane van Niekerk’s status is also uncertain due to a calf injury that has sidelined her since the New Zealand tour. Questions linger over her role as an all-rounder, particularly her bowling capabilities post-injury.
South Africa, the runners-up in the previous Women’s T20 World Cup, is working towards finalizing their squad before the ICC’s early June deadline, allowing changes only under exceptional circumstances or with ICC approval.
