South Korea participated in the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace for Gaza proposed by US President Donald Trump. Former Ambassador to Egypt Kim Yong-hyon attended the meeting in Washington as an observer. The Board of Peace, comprising over two dozen countries, aims to lead peace efforts in Gaza, with South Korea showing support without being a member.
The South Korean foreign ministry expressed its backing for President Trump’s initiatives to improve peace in Gaza. The government plans to continue contributing to global peace and security efforts in the Middle East. When asked about potential official membership in the initiative, ministry spokesperson Park Il mentioned that the government would prudently review the matter.
Initially focused on addressing the Gaza conflict, the board intends to expand its scope to other global conflicts. Member states are limited to three-year terms unless substantial funding is provided for permanent membership. Notable personalities like US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair have joined the executive board. Despite its ambitious goals, major powers like Brazil, India, and China have declined involvement due to various reservations.
