South Korea’s unification ministry restated its dedication on Monday to pursuing practical solutions for denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula, with a focus on stopping North Korea’s nuclear activities. The ministry emphasized its unwavering goal of achieving a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula through collaboration with the global community. This commitment was reiterated by Yoon Min-ho, the ministry’s spokesperson, during a routine briefing session.

In response to a statement from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, the ministry’s stance was reinforced. Kim Yo-jong had dismissed a joint declaration issued after the annual foreign ministers’ meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Manila, asserting that North Korea’s nuclear capabilities would continue to advance steadily. South Korea’s Unification Minister Chung Dong-young recently highlighted a shift in the government’s approach, emphasizing peace as a prerequisite for resuming discussions with Pyongyang, moving away from a previous focus solely on denuclearisation.

South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun outlined the country’s strategy for denuclearising the Korean Peninsula during the 21st Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity. Cho emphasized a phased and practical approach, along with enhanced cooperation with like-minded nations to promote regional peace and stability. Additionally, Cho underscored South Korea’s commitment to bolstering its defence capabilities in partnership with the US and expanding collaborations with various countries, including the G7 and emerging nations in the Global South.
