South Korea and several UN member states have initiated a new group to tackle technology-enabled human trafficking. The “Group of Friends for Combating Technology-facilitated Trafficking in Persons” was unveiled during an event organized by South Korea’s U.N. mission and the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime. Ambassador Cha Ji-hoon emphasized the necessity of a united approach to combat human trafficking facilitated by digital tools like artificial intelligence, highlighting the global nature of this challenge.
The group aims to be a dynamic platform for all member states to enhance awareness, share best practices, engage in discussions on emerging patterns, and bolster collaboration. This initiative comes in response to the escalating need for international coordination to combat transnational crimes that exploit online platforms for recruitment, control, exploitation of victims, and money laundering.
President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea expressed that South Korea and Italy possess strong potential for strategic business partnerships, envisioning a transformative “new industrial order” through their collaboration. He made these comments during a business roundtable in Rome focused on strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
