South Korea has called for Cambodia and Thailand to engage in talks to de-escalate the border confrontations. The South Korean foreign ministry spokesperson emphasized the importance of resolving the situation peacefully through dialogue at the earliest opportunity. Efforts by ASEAN to ease tensions and seek a peaceful resolution were acknowledged by South Korea.
Bangkok and Phnom Penh have been involved in military clashes along their shared border for three weeks, resulting in at least 80 fatalities. Both countries agreed during a meeting of ASEAN’s top diplomats to initiate discussions between their defense officials to reinstate the ceasefire. The ongoing dispute over the shared land border stems from conflicting territorial claims dating back to the French colonial era.
Cambodia reported that Thai military forces continued to use artillery and tank-mounted machine guns to target Cambodian territory. The civilian death toll in Cambodia has risen to 21, with 83 others injured as a result of the conflict. Approximately 545,000 Cambodians have been displaced from their homes to seek refuge in safe shelters due to the escalating border tensions.
