US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the progress towards a settlement between Russia and Ukraine, stating that the end of the war could be near after months of fighting and diplomatic efforts. Trump, before departing aboard Marine One, mentioned that negotiations were advancing, although he did not provide specific details on any breakthroughs. When asked about discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump stated, “The end of the war in Ukraine, I really think it’s getting very close.”
Trump continued to convey positivity regarding the potential for peace between Moscow and Kyiv, saying, “That war is getting closer. Believe it or not, it’s getting closer. We think we’re going to end up getting a settlement between Russia and Ukraine.” He also refuted reports suggesting an understanding with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning control of the Donbas region, stating, “No. No,” when asked if Russia should have the entire Donbas.
The President emphasized his readiness to take any necessary actions to help bring an end to the conflict. Trump’s remarks were made in the context of outlining broader foreign policy priorities ahead of his upcoming trip to China, where he is set to meet President Xi. He indicated that global conflicts, including the situation in Ukraine, would likely be on the agenda during the summit.
Trump highlighted the potential economic benefits of easing geopolitical tensions, particularly in global energy markets and inflation. He mentioned, “As soon as this war is over, you’re going to see oil prices drop,” while discussing the Iran conflict and broader market conditions. Trump’s comments come amidst ongoing international efforts to encourage negotiations between Russia and Ukraine after more than four years of devastating conflict that has impacted Ukraine and disrupted global systems.
India has also faced pressure from Western nations over its continued purchases of discounted Russian crude oil since the war’s onset. Simultaneously, India has expanded energy and defense cooperation with the United States and Europe while striving to maintain its longstanding strategic partnership with Russia.
