Senior officials from South Korea and the United States recently met to discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the challenges facing global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts. The meeting between Jeong Yeon-doo, South Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister for Diplomatic Strategy and Intelligence, and Christopher Yeaw, US Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, took place in New York during the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty conference.
During the discussions, both sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation and important issues related to disarmament and non-proliferation. They emphasized the significance of bilateral coordination in the face of complex challenges within the disarmament and nonproliferation regime. The officials agreed to collaborate closely throughout the NPT review conference discussions.
Additionally, Jeong also engaged in separate talks with Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olexandr Mischenko to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. Jeong highlighted South Korea’s ongoing support for Ukraine, including efforts to address humanitarian crises and assist in reconstruction. Mischenko expressed gratitude and expressed hope for continued cooperation between the two countries at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
