A South Korean government team is investigating a fire that broke out on the HMM Namu, a cargo ship operated by Korean shipping firm HMM, while it was stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The ship arrived at Drydocks World Dubai for inspection by a team of investigators from the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal and experts from the National Fire Agency. They are analyzing data recorder information, CCTV footage, and crew testimonies.
Twenty-five sailors, including six South Koreans, disembarked from the ship after being questioned by the government team and were relocated to an accommodation facility in Dubai. The fire incident occurred on the same day the United States initiated “Project Freedom” to assist stranded ships in navigating the waterway amid tensions with Iran, sparking debates on the cause of the fire – whether due to an Iranian attack or an internal malfunction.
Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back is scheduled to visit the United States for discussions with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on various issues, including the transfer of wartime operational control. Ahn’s upcoming trip aims to address key matters such as South Korea’s efforts to regain control of its troops and the collaboration with the U.S. in developing nuclear-powered submarines.
