South Korea’s Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back expressed discontent to the United States Forces Korea (USFK) regarding a recent incident where US and Chinese fighter jets faced off during a joint air exercise. The Defence Minister conveyed his concerns to Gen. Xavier Brunson, the commander of the Combined Forces Command and USFK, immediately upon learning of the standoff. Additionally, Gen. Jin Young-sung, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also raised objections in a conversation with Gen. Brunson.
US and Chinese fighter jets encountered each other over the Yellow Sea as part of a US Air Force training operation involving around 10 USFK F-16 fighter jets. The F-16 jets ventured into an area between South Korea and China’s respective air defense identification zones, leading to the dispatch of Chinese fighter jets to the scene. Fortunately, no physical confrontation took place during this encounter.
Amid speculation that the US may redefine the USFK’s role to focus on countering Chinese threats, the recent drills have raised concerns. The US National Defence Strategy hinted at a potential adjustment in US force posture in South Korea, suggesting a shift towards South Korea assuming a primary deterrence role against North Korea with more limited US support. USFK Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson emphasized the importance of the USFK’s flexibility and showcased a unique map that prioritizes the east over the standard north-up orientation.
