South Korea’s main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has criticized the government for downplaying an attack on a South Korean-operated cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The opposition accuses the government of refraining from labeling the incident as an Iranian attack. A South Korean investigation team has determined that two “unidentified airborne objects” caused an explosion and fire on the Panama-flagged cargo vessel Namu, operated by South Korean shipping firm HMM Co.
The PPP leader, Jang Dong-hyeok, expressed disappointment in the government’s initial stance, which suggested low chances of an attack on the vessel. Jang highlighted the government’s reluctance to attribute the attack to Iran, despite confirmation of the strike. He criticized the government for what he perceives as a lack of commitment to safeguarding the people’s safety and property.
Iran’s state media reportedly acknowledged the attacks, a fact that Jang pointed out during the opposition party’s meeting. He likened the situation to an attacker confessing while the victim denies the occurrence. The Iranian government, however, has denied any military involvement in the incident, despite implications in a commentary piece by Iran’s state-run Press TV.
South Korea’s foreign ministry disclosed that surveillance footage captured the unidentified flying objects responsible for the attack on the cargo vessel. However, limitations exist in identifying the exact type, origin, and size of these objects. The ministry plans to analyze engine debris recovered from the scene to gather more information. The government emphasized that it will refrain from assigning blame prematurely for the incident.
PPP floor leader Song Eon-seog criticized the government’s delayed response to what he termed a critical security issue endangering lives. He expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the situation, particularly the delayed acknowledgment of the attack on the vessel. The cargo vessel Namu, among 2,000 other ships, remains stranded in the Strait of Hormuz due to escalating tensions in the region.
