The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared the arrival of the southwest monsoon. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days due to prevailing weather systems over the Bay of Bengal.
Following welcome summer showers in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, the weather department has issued a fresh advisory warning of heavy rainfall in five districts across the state. A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to influence weather conditions, sustaining rainfall for at least three more days, as per the Chennai Meteorological Department.
Authorities have mentioned that moderate to heavy showers are likely in the interior and western regions of Tamil Nadu. Specifically, the districts of Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, and the Nilgiris are expected to receive heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday.
Additionally, the advisory highlights the possibility of heavy rainfall in Karur, Tiruchy, and Sivaganga districts on Monday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds up to 40 kmph may occur in isolated locations during the rainfall activity, prompting residents in affected areas to stay cautious and follow weather updates.
Chennai and its suburbs are anticipated to witness light rainfall during the day, offering relief from rising temperatures. Although widespread heavy showers are not expected in the city, cloudy skies and intermittent rain spells are likely.
Authorities have also cautioned fishermen against venturing into various sea regions due to rough weather conditions. Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph are expected over the south Tamil Nadu coastal areas, the Gulf of Mannar, Kanyakumari Sea region, Andaman Sea, and parts of the south Bay of Bengal. Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories until weather conditions improve.
