The Sports Authority of India (SAI) initiated a four-day Sports Sciences Workshop in New Delhi for combat sports coaches. Coaches from disciplines like Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo participated in the workshop, which aims to enhance the incorporation of sports science in coaching methods. The program is hands-on, focusing on applying scientific principles to training, especially tailored to combat sports.
The workshop includes training in functional strength exercises, plyometrics, periodised resistance programs, and exercise physiology fundamentals for elite performance. Dr. Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, the director of the sports science division at SAI, highlighted the importance of integrating sports science principles into daily coaching routines. The goal is to boost India’s chances of winning medals by prioritizing athlete-centric, coach-led training supported by sports science.
In addition to training methodologies, the workshop covers the prevention and management of common combat-sport injuries, particularly shoulder-related issues. It emphasizes evidence-based warm-up routines, strength training, and load-management strategies. Modules on sports nutrition, recovery science, anti-doping awareness, and sports psychology are included to promote a comprehensive approach for long-term athlete performance and well-being.
Prof. Deepak Joshi, the director of the Sports Injury Centre (SIC) at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital, addressed the inaugural session. He stressed the significance of integrating sports science, sports medicine, and injury management to positively impact athletes’ careers. SAI and the Sports Injury Centre are set to sign an MoU to provide advanced sports medicine and rehabilitation services, ensuring priority care and safe return to competition for Indian athletes.
