In an effort to enhance public transit in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the state Urban Development Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) to establish a Technical Group and a Study Group. These groups are responsible for developing a comprehensive plan for an integrated bus transportation system involving various municipal transport services.
This initiative is part of NITI Aayog’s project to transform specific urban areas into ‘Growth Hubs’ (G-HUB) to drive economic strategies. To oversee this initiative, a G-HUB Regulatory Board chaired by the Chief Minister and a coordination committee led by the Chief Secretary have been put into action.
Following the directives of the G-HUB Regulatory Board, a Task Force was set up on June 10, 2025, to create the initial integrated plan, leading to the establishment of the dedicated study and technical bodies. The Technical Group, chaired by the Assistant General Manager of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), includes transport managers from various municipal corporations in the region.
The Technical Group’s main objectives include streamlining bus routes across municipal boundaries, coordinating service schedules for smooth connections, developing a collaborative roadmap for technology integration and shared infrastructure use among Public Transport Operators (PTOs), and suggesting fare-rationalization formulas and revenue-sharing models for inter-jurisdictional routes.
