Election officials observed queues forming in various constituencies, especially in rural regions, hinting at a gradual rise in voter turnout as the day progresses. The electoral battle in Assam is intense, with polling underway in all 126 Assembly constituencies, primarily between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led opposition alliance.
A total of 722 candidates are contesting in the elections, including notable figures like Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. The electorate, comprising approximately 2.50 crore eligible voters, includes nearly 1.25 crore women and 318 voters from the third gender category.
The Congress party has fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90 candidates. Other parties in the electoral fray include AIUDF, Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland People’s Front, Raijor Dal, AJP, CPI(M), AAP, UPPL, Trinamool Congress, and JMM, along with 258 Independent candidates. Notably, the constituencies of Algapur-Katlicherra and Karimganj South have the most candidates at 15 each.
