At a shopping complex in Tokyo’s Ginza district, a man allegedly sprayed a substance, leading to one person being hospitalized and around 20 others feeling unwell. A woman at the scene made an emergency call due to a “pungent smell” causing coughing among visitors at the Ginza Six shopping complex. CCTV footage revealed the man spraying the unknown substance before fleeing, prompting a search by the police.
A witness near the incident described pedestrians holding their mouths, with one woman stating her throat still felt numb and painful. This event follows a previous incident on April 29 in Fussa, western Tokyo, where a man attacked two high school students with a hammer and sprayed an unknown substance at police officers. The man, believed to be in his 40s, injured the students after an altercation when his mother warned them to be quiet.
In response to the incident, police arrived at the scene where the man threatened them with a knife before spraying the unknown substance, causing injuries to three officers. Despite a search of the man’s residence, only a hammer, a knife, and a spray were found. CCTV footage showed the man fleeing through a back door after the attack. Fortunately, none of the injuries sustained were fatal.
