The Sundarja mango from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, known for its rich aroma and unique taste, is gaining popularity not only in India but also in international markets. This mango variety, grown exclusively in Govindgarh due to the ideal soil and climate, ripens naturally after the first monsoon showers, giving it a distinct flavor. The Madhya Pradesh government highlighted the mango’s nutritional value, including its richness in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, and antioxidant properties.
The Sundarja mango, with its special qualities, has become a favorite among consumers in India and abroad. Apart from its fruit, various parts of the Sundarja tree, such as leaves, bark, and seeds, are valued for traditional and medicinal uses. Rewa has emerged as a significant horticultural center in Madhya Pradesh, with Sundarja mangoes now being exported to countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and France, providing local farmers with better income opportunities.
To support mango cultivation, research is ongoing at the Fruit Research Centre in Kathuliya, Rewa, where an orchard with 2,345 mango trees representing different varieties has been developed. The Govindgarh region is renowned for its diverse mango cultivation, boasting nearly 237 varieties in its orchards. The Bansagar Dam canal has played a crucial role in enhancing horticulture in Rewa and nearby areas by improving irrigation, enabling farmers to expand orchards and fostering the growth of small food-processing units specializing in mango products.
